The delivery was confirmed on Tuesday by the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM), which described the move as part of continued defence cooperation between both countries. In a statement shared on X, AFRICOM said US forces handed over “critical military supplies” to Nigerian partners in Abuja, underscoring what it called a shared commitment to regional security.
According to the US military command, the latest support is intended to strengthen Nigeria’s capacity to respond to escalating security concerns, including terrorism, banditry and mass kidnappings that have surged in recent months. Hundreds of people have been abducted across different parts of the country, particularly in the north, placing renewed pressure on security agencies.
The delivery comes shortly after US forces carried out airstrikes on terrorist enclaves in north-west Nigeria on Christmas Day, highlighting a more active phase of cooperation between Washington and Abuja in counterterrorism efforts.
While AFRICOM did not disclose the specific nature or quantity of the military supplies delivered, the command emphasised that the assistance reflects a long-standing security partnership aimed at supporting Nigeria’s stability and broader regional security objectives.
