Nigerian gospel artiste and producer Minister Oluwatosin Akinsuyi, popularly known as TKeyz, has shared the story behind his viral single “Oluwatosin” and the journey that shaped his evolution from a technology graduate to a music minister driven by purpose.
The Lagos-born creative, who hails from Ondo State, first gained widespread attention when “Oluwatosin” flooded social media platforms, resonating deeply with listeners across Nigeria and beyond. However, behind the sudden spotlight lies a 15-year journey marked by faith, growth and consistency.
Early Life and Education
Born Oluwatosin Ayomide Akinsuyi into a family of five, TKeyz grew up in Lagos State, where he completed his secondary education at Central Senior High School. He later earned a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science from Adekunle Ajasin University.
Although some may view computer science and music as unrelated fields, the artiste explained that his academic background has proven invaluable in his career as a producer and creative director.
“Music production is essentially audio production, which requires strong computer literacy,” he noted, adding that his technical knowledge has enhanced his capacity to create and manage sound professionally.
Spiritual Journey and Musical Calling
Raised in the Celestial Church before his parents transitioned to pastoral leadership in another denomination, TKeyz eventually found his spiritual home at the Redeemed Christian Church of God about eight years ago, where he continues to serve.
He described his ability to play the keyboard as a natural gift rather than a formally acquired skill. What began as a passion soon evolved into ministry and, ultimately, a calling.
“At some point, music stopped being just what I loved to do. It became my assignment,” he said.
The stage name “TKeyz” emerged from a desire to simplify his brand identity. Formerly known as “Oluwatkeyz,” he adopted the shortened version following advice from a friend. The name combines the initial “T” from Tosin with “Keyz,” symbolising the keyboard that, in his words, unlocked his purpose.
Fifteen Years of Persistence
Though his recent viral success may appear sudden, TKeyz has been recording music for over a decade and a half. Some of his previous songs include Egole, If Not For You, Jesus Did It, and Evidence.
He described the journey as one of “hope, hard work and consistency,” acknowledging both high and low moments along the way.
“You don’t just appear overnight. It’s a process filled with trials, growth and learning,” he said, crediting his resilience to his faith and the belief that God orchestrates every season.
The Birth of “Oluwatosin”
According to the artiste, the song “Oluwatosin” was birthed during a deeply reflective season marked by questions, surrender and renewed understanding of his identity in Christ.
“It came from a place of faith and hope,” he explained. “It speaks about total surrender and standing the test of time.”
He admitted he never anticipated the song would gain global traction, noting that every song he releases is inspired by the Holy Spirit. For him, the overwhelming response reinforced the belief that “every season has its sound.”
Rather than take credit for the song’s success, he described himself as a vessel privileged to carry a message that resonated widely.
Gospel Music as a Tool for Transformation
TKyez maintains that gospel music in Nigeria remains a powerful spiritual force capable of renewing lives and shaping destinies. While acknowledging challenges within the industry, he expressed confidence that the impact of gospel sound cannot be diminished.
“God is raising an army through sound,” he said, pointing to testimonies of lives changed and hearts healed through music.
Influences and Vision for the Future
Though he once described himself as a “street boy” growing up, he believes his life story now serves as encouragement to others from similar backgrounds. Looking ahead, he envisions being used as an instrument of deliverance for a generation.
Among those he honours as influences are respected gospel ministers such as Nathaniel Bassey and Dunsin Oyekan, whose dedication and hunger for God he deeply admires.
As he reflects on the road travelled and the path ahead, TKeyz insists that his mission remains unchanged — to communicate God’s heart through sound and give all glory to Jesus.
With renewed momentum following the viral success of “Oluwatosin,” the gospel minister says the journey is only just beginning.
