Ojo Addresses Backlash, Insists She Promoted FAAN Changes Out of Love for Nigeria

Nollywood actress Iyabo Ojo has addressed public speculation over a recently circulated video in which she praised upgrades at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos, insisting that the video was neither sponsored nor politically motivated.

The clip, which surfaced online last week, showcased the actress highlighting improvements at the airport, including renovations at Terminal 1, the aesthetic and comfort upgrades at Terminal 2, and the service of FAAN’s Protocol Team. The video quickly drew mixed reactions, with some social media users questioning the endorsement in light of Ojo’s previous political positions, notably her criticism of the APC government during the 2020 EndSARS protests and her support for Peter Obi in the 2023 presidential election.

In the Instagram caption accompanying the video, Ojo wrote, “FAAN is changing for the better in so many ways. Besides the renovation of the MMIA Lagos Terminal 1 and the beauty & comfort of Terminal 2, the service of their Protocol Team is exceptional. I’m so proud of my country.”

Following the stir, Olubunmi Kuku, Managing Director of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), clarified that Ojo was not a brand ambassador and had not received any contract or payment. She explained that the actress was simply asked to raise awareness of the airport’s improvements while filming a movie scene. “There was no financial incentive,” Kuku stated on her verified X account.

Responding to the backlash, Ojo took to Instagram on Sunday to provide context. She emphasized that her actions were rooted in patriotism, not politics. “I’m Nigerian. And I’m a voice. When I see progress — airports upgraded, roads rebuilt, systems improved — I shout it from the rooftops, if need be, not because I’m paid, not because I’m political, but because I feel it and I want good for my country,” she wrote.

Ojo revealed that FAAN approached her after she had received approval to film at the airport, asking her to help highlight the changes. “FAAN approached me: You’ve seen the changes, please help us spread the word. So I did. FOR FREE. No fee. No contract. Just love for Nigeria,” she said.

The actress stressed that she praises good initiatives regardless of the political administration behind them, adding that she is open to collaborations with any political party as long as it contributes to national development. “I praise GOOD — not government, and if the government does good, I’ll praise them too. My loyalty? To my country. Always… No hate. No agenda. Just hands joined,” Ojo concluded.
