Organisers of the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon have announced a major route adjustment for the 11th edition of the race, underscoring the event’s steady evolution and growing global profile.

Scheduled for February 14, this year’s 42km marathon will, for the first time, pass through sections of the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Road before culminating at the iconic Eko Atlantic City. The development marks a historic milestone for the race, offering athletes and spectators a fresh experience while showcasing some of Lagos’ newest infrastructure.

The race will now commence at ORCA Mall on Ahmadu Bello Way, Victoria Island, departing from its traditional starting point in Surulere. Organisers say the decision reflects both logistical considerations and a broader vision to continually refresh the marathon’s appeal.

Speaking on the significance of the changes, the Chief Executive Officer of Nilayo Sports Management, Mrs Yetunde Olopade, noted that the Lagos City Marathon has grown beyond a competitive road race into a platform for talent discovery, continental pride and economic stimulation.

As a World Athletics Gold Label event, she explained, the marathon is committed to setting higher standards for road racing in Africa. Routing the course through parts of the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Road was designed to add visual appeal and give both local and international athletes an opportunity to experience the newly developed corridor.

Mrs Olopade added that the 2025 edition represents more than just a sporting contest, describing it as a celebration of 11 years of consistency and growth. Over the years, the marathon has become one of Africa’s most anticipated sporting events, amplifying the continent’s presence on the global athletics stage.

Beyond sports, the marathon continues to deliver measurable economic benefits to Lagos, stimulating activity across transportation, hospitality and small-scale businesses. The annual event, she said, creates hundreds of direct jobs and thousands of indirect employment opportunities, reinforcing its role as a catalyst for local economic development.
