Organisers of the 11th Access Bank Lagos City Marathon, Nilayo Sports Management Limited, have announced a review of their medal distribution framework following a crowd surge at the 10km race medal collection point on Saturday. Officials promised an immediate and orderly redistribution exercise to ensure all verified participants receive their awards.

The marathon, which began at 6:30 a.m. from Orca Shopping Mall along Ahmadu Bello Way in Eko Atlantic City and concluded at Eko Atlantic, Victoria Island, Lagos, saw Kenya’s Ezra Kering clinch victory in the men’s 42km race with a time of 2:11:55. Ethiopia’s Meseret Dinke won the women’s 42km category, finishing in 2:37:36.

While the full marathon events concluded successfully, reports from BrandIconImage indicate that the 10km race was overshadowed by confusion at the finish line. Allegations of medal-buying and a chaotic rush for medals emerged after a large crowd overwhelmed the collection area, disrupting the process and raising safety concerns.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the organisers expressed concern for participants affected by the incident and vowed corrective action.

“Most importantly, our hearts go out to everyone who was affected by the surge or experienced distress during this period. We understand the excitement and emotion that come with crossing the finish line, and we deeply regret any anxiety, discomfort, or inconvenience caused,” the statement read.

Officials added that the chaos stemmed in part from a significant influx of individuals arriving at the 10km finish area ahead of the race start, including some unauthorised participants using race bibs from previous editions.

To address the issue, the marathon organisers have outlined a structured medal redistribution plan. Runners who have not yet received their medals are required to present valid race materials and identification at designated collection points. The redistribution will involve strict queuing protocols, enhanced volunteer support, and reinforced security measures to ensure a smooth and fair process.

“A comprehensive schedule detailing dates, times, and the exact collection venue will be communicated across all official marathon channels shortly,” the statement added.

The organisers also said they are reviewing their medal distribution system to prevent similar incidents in future editions, aiming to provide a safer and more orderly experience for all participants.
