Number Ones Surges Back With Vinyl Boost, Earns New Top 10 On Billboard Charts
More than two decades after its original release, Number Ones by Michael Jackson is enjoying one of its strongest weeks in years, powered by a long-awaited vinyl rollout that has reignited demand across the United States.
The career-spanning compilation, widely regarded as a definitive collection of the King of Pop’s chart-topping singles, debuts on multiple Billboard rankings while climbing to new highs on others. The resurgence delivers Jackson a fresh top 10 placement and brings the set close to a historic milestone on an R&B chart.
Vinyl Release Sparks Sales Explosion
Following its recent availability on vinyl — issued in multiple color variants depending on retailer and territory — Number Ones opens at No. 4 on the Vinyl Albums chart, which tracks the week’s top-selling projects on wax. The compilation also debuts at No. 36 on the Top Streaming Albums chart, reflecting renewed digital interest across platforms such as Spotify, Apple Music and Tidal.
The impact on pure sales has been dramatic. On the Top Album Sales chart, Number Ones reenters at a new peak of No. 7. According to Luminate data, weekly purchases surged by more than 3,200% following the vinyl release. The set sold nearly 9,700 copies in the U.S. during the tracking frame — up from just 300 the week prior.
Near-Miss at No. 1 on R&B Chart
The renewed momentum also sends the compilation back to its established peaks on both the Top R&B Albums and Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums charts. On the R&B-only tally, Number Ones rises to No. 2, narrowly missing what would have been its first reign at No. 1.
Holding firm at the summit is SZA’s SOS, which extends its record-setting dominance with a 132nd week atop the Top R&B Albums chart. On the broader Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums list, Jackson’s compilation returns to No. 6.
Back on the Billboard 200
Number Ones also reenters the all-genre Billboard 200 at No. 18, marking another strong showing for a collection that has become a perennial catalog staple. Despite its enduring popularity, the album has never cracked the top 10 on the Billboard 200. Its highest placement remains No. 13 — a mark it comes within five spots of matching this week.
‘Thriller’ Remains a Sales Force
Jackson occupies multiple spaces on key Billboard rankings this frame, as his landmark album Thriller continues to perform strongly. The Grammy-winning blockbuster sits just outside the top 10 on the Vinyl Albums chart at No. 11, holding steady from the previous week.
On the Top Album Sales chart, Thriller climbs from No. 23 to No. 21, with purchases increasing by more than 14% week over week as several hundred additional fans added the classic to their collections.
The parallel success of both Number Ones and Thriller underscores Jackson’s enduring commercial power. Decades after their release, his catalog continues to resonate across physical and streaming formats alike — proof that the demand for the King of Pop’s biggest hits remains as potent as ever.
