The initiative, themed “EmbraceYourSkin”, was unveiled at a press conference hosted by Eucerin at the LUTH Dermatological Clinic, LUTH Annexe, Harvey Road, Yaba, Lagos, bringing together dermatologists, health advocates, journalists, and stakeholders from the healthcare and beauty sectors.
Health Risks Overshadow Cosmetic Appeal
The NAD warned that skin bleaching, a practice that intentionally lightens the skin through topical products, cosmetic procedures, oral tablets, and even intravenous treatments, poses a serious public health crisis. While lighter skin is often perceived as socially or professionally advantageous, medical experts stress that the risks far outweigh any cosmetic benefits.
“Skin bleaching is not just a cosmetic choice. It is a health risk with severe complications,” said Prof. Dasetima Altraide, NAD President.
Prof. Altraide highlighted the severe consequences of the practice, linking it to rising incidences of skin cancers, treatment-resistant fungal infections, skin destruction, allergies, and damage to vital organs such as the liver and kidneys. Alarmingly, he noted that children and unborn babies are increasingly exposed to harmful bleaching substances, including cases where pregnant mothers ingest products to lighten their unborn children.

Educating and Empowering Nigerians

The campaign aims to dismantle the false societal narratives that label dark skin as inferior, while empowering individuals to embrace their natural complexion.
“Our mission is to educate, protect, and empower Nigerians to embrace their natural skin tones. Pharmacists, regulatory bodies, the media, and every Nigerian have a role to play. Together, we can dismantle the false narratives that have unfairly labelled dark skin as inferior,” Prof. Altraide said.
He further urged pharmacists and regulatory agencies to ensure that harmful bleaching agents are not easily accessible over the counter, while calling on the media to amplify accurate information that reshapes public perception.
The “EmbraceYourSkin” campaign represents a concerted effort to merge health advocacy with societal education, emphasizing that beauty and wellness start with safety and self-acceptance.
