CNN International’s flagship magazine programme, African Voices Changemakers, this weekend spotlights one of Nigeria’s leading music producers. Pheelz, 31, the creative force behind some of Afrobeats’ most influential tracks, sits down for an in-depth conversation that charts his journey from Lagos church bands to the global music stage.

The 30-minute special, sponsored by telecommunications giant Globacom, premieres today, offering audiences a rare, unfiltered glimpse into the life and creative philosophy of a producer who has helped shape modern African music.

Hosted by acclaimed journalist Larry Madowo, the conversation navigates the triad that defines Pheelz’s journey: faith, fame, and the disciplined artistry that has propelled him from church rehearsals in Lagos to global recognition.

From his early days as a multi-instrumentalist performing in church, where music was both a spiritual and technical training ground, Pheelz’s path has been a steady ascent. His breakout came in 2012 with chart-topping productions for rapper Olamide, including “First of All” and “F***ing with the Devil.” Recognition followed swiftly: by 2013, he was listed among NotJustOk’s “Top 10 Hottest Producers in Nigeria.”

His near-total production of Olamide’s Baddest Guy Ever Liveth garnered nominations at The Headies and the 2014 Nigeria Entertainment Awards, cementing his reputation as a force in the industry. In 2020, he earned The Headies’ Producer of the Year award, and his 2021 collaboration with Bnxn, “Finesse,” won Best Collaboration at the Soundcity MVP Awards, becoming a continental anthem.

On the programme, Pheelz reflects on the experiences that shaped his sound and his perspective, including the impact of Artificial Intelligence on music creation. He emphasizes that for him, artistry extends beyond algorithms—it is memory, movement, and cultural storytelling expressed through rhythm.

The special airs at 8:30 a.m. West African Time on DStv Channel 401 this Saturday, with repeat broadcasts at 12:00 noon, Sunday at 4:30 a.m. and 7:00 p.m., Monday at 4:00 a.m. and 6:45 p.m., and Tuesday at 6:45 p.m., continuing through the following Monday.

Viewers tuning in will encounter more than a hitmaker. They will meet a craftsman of cadence—an artist who has transformed rhythm into currency, melody into memory, and Afrobeats into a global passport.
