Academic activities were disrupted on Tuesday at Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso, as students barricaded the institution’s main gate in protest against the relocation of the Department of Anatomy and Physiology.

The aggrieved students blocked the entrance to the campus, chanting solidarity songs and displaying placards to register their opposition to the university management’s decision to move the department from the College of Health Sciences to the Faculty of Pure and Applied Sciences.

Messages on the placards reflected strong dissatisfaction with the move. Some read: “LAUTECH!!! Don’t Separate Physiology from Medicine,” “Protect the Integrity of Medical Sciences,” “Physiology belongs to Basic Medical Sciences,” “Our Discipline Is Not Experimental,” and “LAUTECH!! We Won’t Be Silenced.”

An internal memorandum obtained in Ibadan on Tuesday revealed that the university’s Senate approved the relocation during its meeting held on January 21, 2026. The memo stated that the Department of Anatomy and Physiology was to be transferred as required from the College of Health Sciences to the Faculty of Pure and Applied Sciences.

The decision also included the transfer of non-medical staff members attached to the department to the new faculty, a move said to be aimed at facilitating smoother career progression.

The memo, signed by Olayinka O. Balogun (Mrs) and copied to the Vice-Chancellor, indicated that the approval had taken immediate effect and called for cooperation to ensure a seamless transition.

However, the development has sparked widespread dissatisfaction among students, many of whom insist that Physiology is fundamentally a medical science discipline and should remain within the College of Health Sciences. The protesters vowed to sustain their action until the university management reverses the decision.

As of the time of filing this report, efforts to reach the institution’s Public Relations Officer, Lekan Fadeyi, for official comments were unsuccessful.
