A dominant display at the Santiago Bernabéu on Saturday saw Real Madrid climb to the summit of the LaLiga standings with a commanding 4–1 victory over Real Sociedad, as Trent Alexander-Arnold delivered one of his most influential performances of the season.

The England international set the tone early, producing a precise delivery into the box that allowed Gonzalo García to open the scoring inside five minutes. The early breakthrough settled Madrid, who extended their advantage through two penalties converted by Vinícius Júnior and a powerful strike from Federico Valverde, sealing an emphatic result that sent them top of the table.

After the match, head coach Álvaro Arbeloa was effusive in his praise of Alexander-Arnold, describing Madrid as “lucky to have” a player of his intelligence and versatility.

“We’re not going to discover anything new about Trent,” Arbeloa told club media. “What stood out was how he understands the game, how he identifies spaces. For a coach, having players who grasp what you want so quickly is very important.”

Alexander-Arnold has endured a challenging debut campaign in Spain following his high-profile summer move from Liverpool FC. Injuries have restricted him to just 466 LaLiga minutes, yielding two assists. However, Saturday’s display offered a reminder of the technical quality and tactical awareness that made him one of Europe’s most sought-after full-backs.

Arbeloa opted to start him at right-back ahead of Spain international Dani Carvajal, with Valverde restored to his preferred midfield role. Carvajal later replaced Alexander-Arnold after an impressive 60-minute outing.

“Working with him, he strikes me as a very intelligent player who understands the game very well,” Arbeloa added in his post-match press conference. “He’s not the typical full-back who stays wide — he can move inside and interchange positions. We want that flexibility. We’re fortunate to have someone like him.”

Arbeloa also highlighted the impact of Vinícius Júnior, who has now scored in consecutive league matches for the first time since August, rebounding strongly after serving a suspension last weekend.

“I’ve been seeing a great Vinícius for a month now, not just in this match,” the coach said. “He’s performing at a very high level and can change games. For me, he goes beyond statistics — he influences matches.”

Meanwhile, Kylian Mbappé remained an unused substitute, with García preferred in attack. Arbeloa revealed the decision was precautionary, as the French forward continues to manage discomfort in his left knee ahead of Tuesday’s UEFA Champions League playoff first leg against SL Benfica.

“Mbappé has been dealing with knee discomfort for some time,” Arbeloa explained. “He always gives a great effort when he plays, but today we didn’t want to take risks with Tuesday in mind.”

With momentum building and key players returning to form, Madrid appear well-positioned both domestically and in Europe as the decisive phase of the season approaches.
