Global pop icon Shakira is set to conclude the Mexican leg of her Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran World Tour with a landmark free concert at the heart of Mexico City’s historic Zócalo on March 1. The highly anticipated show marks her return to the emblematic square nearly two decades after her last performance there in 2007.

The Colombian superstar announced the concert in a brief video shared on social media on Friday (Feb. 20), recalling her previous appearance at the venue. “¡México lindo! Remember 2007 when I sang for you at the Zócalo? Today, I want to tell you that this experience will happen again this Sunday, March 1, at 8:00 PM,” she said. Expressing gratitude to her Mexican fans, she added, “You have given me so, so much, and I hope I can give back a little bit of that love you’ve given me.”

Mexico City’s Head of Government, Clara Brugada, reinforced the announcement in a separate social media video alongside Daniel Concenzo, president of Grupo Modelo, which is sponsoring the event. Brugada described Shakira as “an extraordinary Latin artist who has triumphed worldwide,” noting that she is deeply loved in Mexico.

Shakira also confirmed that part of the concert will be broadcast live through her digital platforms, allowing fans beyond the capital to join the celebration.

Beyond the Zócalo performance, the “Hips Don’t Lie” hitmaker is preparing for another massive open-air spectacle on May 2 at Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Organizers are expecting a crowd of at least one million people, echoing the scale of recent record-breaking concerts staged at the iconic beach by Madonna in 2024 and Lady Gaga in 2025.

The Mexico City show will cap a historic run of 31 concerts across Mexico that began in March 2025, including 12 sold-out dates at the capital’s Estadio GNP Seguros, with a 13th scheduled for Feb. 27. Ahead of the Zócalo event, Shakira is slated to perform in Tuxtla Gutiérrez, Chiapas (Feb. 21) and Mérida, Yucatán (Feb. 24).

Her Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran World Tour has already cemented its place in music history, earning a Guinness World Record as the highest-grossing tour by a Hispanic artist of all time. According to Billboard Boxscore, the tour grossed $421.6 million and sold 3.3 million tickets across 86 reported shows.

The Zócalo — Mexico’s principal public square — remains one of the most symbolic and culturally significant gathering spaces in the world. Considered the second-largest public plaza globally after Beijing’s Tiananmen Square, it has hosted major political, cultural and musical events.

Shakira first performed at the Zócalo on May 27, 2007, drawing an estimated 210,000 attendees, surpassing the previous record set by Mexican rock band Café Tacvba in 2005 with 170,000. The current attendance record belongs to Argentine band Los Fabulosos Cadillacs, which gathered 300,000 fans in June 2023, followed by Grupo Firme with 280,000 the year prior.

With anticipation building, Shakira’s return to the Zócalo is poised to be both a symbolic homecoming and a defining moment in an already record-breaking tour.
