Excitement is building across Nigeria’s commercial capital as the 11th edition of the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon takes centre stage this Saturday, blending elite athletics with music, culture and community celebration.

Organisers have confirmed that award-winning music sensation Shoday will perform live at the post-race party scheduled to hold at Eko Atlantic City, where runners and spectators will gather at the finish line. The celebration is designed not only to honour participants but also to reinforce the marathon’s reputation as a lifestyle and cultural event.

Thousands of elite and recreational runners are expected to compete across Lagos, widely regarded as one of Africa’s most vibrant and iconic cities. According to the organisers, the infusion of music and cultural entertainment adds an electrifying dimension to this year’s Valentine’s season race, ensuring that athletes and fans alike experience more than just a test of endurance.

Marking a New Decade

The marathon’s organiser, Nilayo Sports Management Limited, described the 11th edition as symbolic—ushering in a new decade for one of Africa’s most prestigious road races.

Speaking at the corporate headquarters of Access Bank in Lagos, the Managing Director of Nilayo Sports Management Limited, Yetunde Olopade, said the 2026 edition reflects growth, resilience and renewed ambition.

“This 11th edition is symbolic for us. It is not just another race; it signals the beginning of another decade of excellence, impact and global recognition for the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon,” she said.

Olopade expressed appreciation to Access Bank, other corporate sponsors and the Lagos State Government for their sustained support, noting that their partnership has helped build one of the continent’s most respected road races. She assured runners and spectators of a seamless, world-class event that would further enhance the marathon’s international profile.

Elevating Lagos’ Global Profile

Also speaking, the Director General of the Lagos State Sports Commission, Lekan Fatodu, praised the organisers for their professionalism, observing that the marathon continues to elevate Lagos’ standing on the global sporting map.

Adding an international perspective, Nadeem Khan, President of the International Association of Ultra Runners, described the marathon’s growth over the years as remarkable, commending stakeholders for their clear vision and consistent execution.

The race has evolved into one of Africa’s premier long-distance events, attracting top Kenyan and Ethiopian runners alongside Nigeria’s finest athletes. This year’s contest is expected to be fiercely competitive, with substantial prize money at stake and global attention on the finish line.

A Race by the Coast

Former Nigerian jumper Yusuf Alli expressed confidence in the preparations, stating that all necessary measures had been put in place to ensure a successful outing. He noted that routing the race through the coastal road would offer participants a smoother and more enjoyable course.

Alli also referenced the long-standing vision for a coastal highway connecting Lagos to Calabar, originally championed by the late Festus Okotie-Eboh, describing the current development as a milestone worth celebrating.

From the starting gun to the closing festivities at Eko Atlantic City, this year’s marathon promises a fusion of endurance and entertainment—an event where athletic excellence meets cultural celebration in one unforgettable Lagos experience.
