Says Silence Cost Him Years of Reputational Damage
Reality television star Tope Adenibuyan, popularly known as Teddy A, has spoken out about the emotional toll and lasting reputational harm caused by allegations that he physically abused his wife, actress and media personality Bamike “Bambam” Olawunmi-Adenibuyan. In a candid interview on the WithChude podcast, Teddy A described the accusations as entirely false, explaining that the claims shocked his family and created deep distress that continues to affect them years later.
The former Big Brother Naija housemate said the allegations first emerged on social media, with reports accusing him of beating his wife, even during her pregnancy. According to him, the claims came out of nowhere and caught both him and his wife off guard. He recalled the day the story broke, saying there was no sign of conflict in their home.
“I woke up, went downstairs, and my wife was there watching a movie. She was pregnant and laughing,” he said, emphasizing how normal and peaceful their morning had been. It was only after he noticed a sudden surge of phone notifications that he realised something was wrong.
“I hadn’t posted anything. I was wondering what was trending and why my phone was blowing up,” he said, adding that he initially could not understand the reason for the online uproar. As he scrolled through the comments, he said his wife became visibly emotional and confused, repeatedly asking who could do such a thing to them. He admitted that he too was baffled and had no idea where the allegations originated.
Teddy A explained that the reports triggered intense online discussion and speculation, and he was stunned by how quickly the narrative spread. He said he reached out to his manager for guidance, and was advised to stay silent and let the issue fade away. He followed the advice, but later realised the decision came with serious consequences.
“At the time, I didn’t understand the damage staying silent would do. Even now, when my wife and I post photos or videos, people still comment and ask if I beat her,” he said, describing how the accusations have lingered and continued to shape public perception of him.
He expressed how painful the experience has been, saying it changed how some people view him and that the false narrative has been difficult to erase. “It affected me because people began to see me in a way that wasn’t true,” he added, underscoring the long-term impact of unverified claims on his personal and public life.
Teddy A’s revelation has reignited conversations about the power of social media to amplify unverified allegations and the importance of addressing false claims quickly before they become entrenched narratives. Neither Teddy A nor Bambam has ever confirmed any incident of domestic abuse, and they have continued to present a united front publicly, maintaining their relationship amid the ongoing speculation.
