A new milestone has been added to Tems’ steadily growing list of global achievements as the Nigerian star records her seventh entry on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart, making her the first African female artist to reach the feat.

The latest achievement comes after her song “What You Need” made a surprise debut at number 93 on this week’s Billboard Hot 100. The entry brings her total appearances on the chart to seven, further cementing her status as one of Africa’s most successful contemporary exports.

With this development, Tems is now tied with fellow Nigerian superstar Burna Boy and South African rock band Seether as the African artists with the highest number of Billboard Hot 100 entries, all standing at seven.

Her Billboard journey has been marked by historic moments. In 2022, Tems became the first African artist to debut at number one on the Billboard Hot 100, following the success of “Wait For U,” her collaboration with Future and Drake. The track went on to enjoy widespread global acclaim and commercial success.

The tie may be short-lived, however, as Tems is expected to add yet another Hot 100 appearance next week. J. Cole’s upcoming track “Bunce Road Blues,” which features Tems and Future, is projected to debut on the chart, potentially placing her ahead of her African peers.

As her international presence continues to grow, Tems’ latest accomplishment underscores the expanding influence of African artists on the global music stage.
