Media personality Toke Makinwa has reignited conversations on church giving after revealing why she no longer contributes tithes, citing the financial strength of many churches.
In a candid interview on WithChude, Makinwa outlined her personal philosophy on charitable giving, emphasizing that she prefers to direct her contributions toward meeting immediate human needs rather than institutional obligations.
“Every church is building. Every Sunday, there’s a building fund envelope. You guys have so much money and it’s not taxed. It’s a business, if we are going to be real. Because if that pastor dies today, either his wife or his child becomes the next pastor,” she remarked, noting the ongoing construction projects and other revenue-generating activities within many congregations.
Despite stepping back from tithing, Makinwa clarified that she continues to give offerings and supports church initiatives when necessary. Her focus, however, has shifted toward addressing practical needs in her community.
“I now prefer to use my money to meet actual needs,” she said, explaining that she channels funds to help people pay house rent, support widows, and cover hospital or maternity expenses.
Makinwa’s comments have prompted discussions on the role of tithing, the transparency of church finances, and alternative ways individuals can contribute to social welfare while maintaining their faith commitments.
