One of the long-standing frustrations of group chats is that new members often join without any context—they can’t see what was already discussed, leaving them out of the loop. WhatsApp is addressing this with its upcoming Group Message History feature, designed to help new participants catch up without compromising privacy.

As the name suggests, Group Message History allows someone added to a group to view recent conversations. Instead of starting from scratch, new members can quickly see what’s being discussed and contribute meaningfully to the chat.

For privacy reasons, WhatsApp limits how far back new members can access messages. When adding someone to a group, the app prompts the user to select how much history to share, with options ranging from the last 25 to 100 messages, in increments of 25. In most cases, this gives new members enough context without exposing the full history.

This selective sharing sets WhatsApp apart from platforms like Telegram, which offers an all-or-nothing approach to chat history. Unlike Telegram, you cannot choose just a portion of the conversation to share. It also gives WhatsApp an edge over iMessage, which currently lacks any feature that allows sharing past group messages with newcomers.

It’s important to note that history sharing must happen at the moment a new member is added. If you forget to select a history range, you’ll need to remove and re-add them to share past messages. To maintain transparency, WhatsApp informs existing group members whenever history is shared, and the imported messages display timestamps and sender information differently from regular chat messages to make the distinction clear.

Admins Retain Control

Group admins remain in control of the feature. While they can disable history sharing for the group entirely, individual admins can still choose to share history when adding members. As with all WhatsApp communications, Group Message History will be end-to-end encrypted, ensuring that both existing and new messages remain private and secure.

WhatsApp plans to roll out Group Message History gradually to users worldwide, aiming to make group chats more seamless and inclusive without compromising security.
