Wunmi Mosaku Wins Best Supporting Actress at 79th BAFTA Film Awards

British-Nigerian star Wunmi Mosaku has claimed the Best Supporting Actress prize at the 79th edition of the British Academy Film Awards for her powerful performance in Sinners, triumphing over a competitive field and further cementing her reputation as one of the most compelling screen talents of her generation.

Mosaku secured the award ahead of Teyana Taylor, who was nominated for One Battle After Another, and Emily Watson for her role in Hamnet. The victory marks Mosaku’s second BAFTA win and her first in the film category.

Her career has steadily ascended over the past decade. In 2017, she won the BAFTA TV Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Damilola, Our Loved Boy, and in 2021, she earned a BAFTA Film Award nomination for Best Leading Actress for her acclaimed performance in His House. With Sinners, she has now added a major film accolade to her growing list of honours.

Mosaku, who accepted the award while heavily pregnant, delivered an emotional speech that has since gone viral. She dedicated the win to her daughter, saying: “To my daughter, you are my greatest teacher. I am so proud of you, everything begins and ends with you.”

Reflecting on her portrayal of Annie in Sinners, she spoke candidly about the personal resonance of the role. “I found a part of myself in Annie, a part of my hopes, my ancestral power and connection, parts I thought I had lost or tried to dim as an immigrant trying to fit in,” she said.

She concluded by addressing the film’s director, Ryan Coogler, expressing gratitude for the creative space he cultivated on set. “I felt the presence of the ancestors’ pride and joy daily on your set,” she noted.

The win not only highlights Mosaku’s continued artistic evolution but also underscores the expanding global recognition of diverse voices shaping contemporary cinema.
