Apple is preparing to open its Siri voice assistant to rival artificial intelligence services, potentially allowing users to route queries to third-party AI apps such as Alphabet’s Gemini or Anthropic’s Claude, Bloomberg News reported Thursday, citing sources familiar with the matter. The move is expected to be part of the company’s upcoming iOS 27 update.

Currently, Siri’s AI integrations are limited, with ChatGPT being its primary third-party partner. The planned change would mark a significant shift in Apple’s AI strategy, positioning the iPhone as a more flexible platform for artificial intelligence and giving users greater choice over which AI services handle their requests.

According to Bloomberg, Apple is developing tools that will enable chatbot apps downloaded through the App Store to work seamlessly with Siri and other Apple Intelligence features. Users would be able to select their preferred AI service for specific types of queries, offering a more customizable experience than the current setup.

The overhaul could also present a new revenue stream for Apple, as the company may take a cut of subscriptions sold through third-party AI services.

Apple is expected to preview the new capabilities at its Worldwide Developers Conference in June, though details of the rollout could still change. The company did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Reuters.

The move underscores Apple’s efforts to catch up with other Silicon Valley tech giants in AI, as competitors increasingly embed advanced chatbot capabilities into their ecosystems.
