Legendary Kola Oyewo celebrates his 80th birthday today, March 27, 2026, marking a remarkable milestone in a career that has shaped both Nigerian theatre and Nollywood.
Born in 1946 in Oba Ile, Osun State, Oyewo began his acting journey in 1964 with the Oyin Adejobi Theatre Group, laying the foundation for a career spanning over five decades. He rose to prominence with his portrayal of “Odewale” in The Gods Are Not to Blame and became a household name through roles in productions such as Sango, Super Story, and Saworoide.
A dedicated scholar, Oyewo earned a Ph.D. in Drama from the University of Ibadan and has taught at prominent institutions including Obafemi Awolowo University and Redeemer’s University. He currently lectures at Elizade University, where he continues to inspire the next generation of actors and dramatists.
Throughout his career, Oyewo has been a tireless advocate for Yoruba culture and a driving force in the promotion of Nigerian storytelling on stage and screen. His enduring contributions to the entertainment industry have earned him widespread recognition and admiration, solidifying his place as one of Nigeria’s most respected thespian figures.
