The upgraded terminal more than doubles in size to approximately 25,750 square metres and features additional boarding gates, check-in counters, and automated baggage systems, all aimed at reducing congestion and streamlining the passenger experience. The airline said the expansion will significantly improve travel across its domestic network.
Responding to Rising Travel Demand
The development comes amid growing demand for air travel in Ethiopia, fueled by economic activity, business trips, and a rebound in tourism. In 2025, the country recorded a 15 per cent increase in international arrivals, while domestic travel between regional cities is also on the rise.
Ethiopian Airlines currently operates over 200 domestic flights daily, connecting Addis Ababa with more than 20 destinations, including Mekelle, Bahir Dar, and Dire Dawa. The airline plays a crucial role in a country where mountainous terrain and long distances make road travel slow and difficult.
Strengthening Addis Ababa as an African Aviation Hub
The terminal upgrade also bolsters Addis Ababa’s position as a key aviation hub, connecting Africa to Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and the Americas. Improved domestic connections are expected to ease transfers for international passengers and enhance the airport’s overall efficiency.
This project is part of a broader expansion strategy by Ethiopian Airlines and the Ethiopian government. The airline has announced plans to open three new domestic airports, expanding its network to 26 destinations. In addition, authorities are constructing a new airport near Bishoftu, roughly 45 kilometres from the capital, projected to handle up to 100 million passengers annually and potentially become Africa’s largest airport.
Vision 2040 and Long-Term Growth
The investments align with Ethiopian Airlines’ Vision 2040 plan, which aims to grow revenue to $29 billion while expanding its fleet and global route network. As competition among African aviation hubs intensifies, the airline is betting that continued investment in infrastructure will help it maintain its market lead and capture a larger share of the continent’s growing passenger traffic.
With modernized facilities and an expanding network, Ethiopian Airlines is positioning itself to meet the rising demand for both domestic and international travel, reinforcing Ethiopia’s role as a central aviation gateway for Africa and beyond.
