Renewed calls for gender inclusion and social empowerment have emerged as Nigeria joined the global community to mark International Women's Day, with former Minister of Humanitarian Affairs Betta Edu urging stronger commitment to advancing opportunities for women and supporting vulnerable populations.

In a message commemorating the 2026 celebration, Edu said the day provides an opportunity to recognise women who continue to drive social change, empower communities, and extend support to those most in need.

She noted that she joined Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, alongside other influential women across the world in celebrating individuals who have made meaningful contributions through advocacy, empowerment initiatives, and humanitarian efforts.

Emphasising the Theme “Give to Gain”

According to Edu, the theme for this year’s celebration—“Give to Gain”—highlights the importance of intentional investment in women and girls as a pathway to building stronger societies.

She explained that the theme serves as a reminder that achieving a just and prosperous world requires sustained efforts to promote gender equality, expand opportunities for women, and support their ambitions.

Edu said empowering women involves more than recognition; it requires policies and initiatives that enable them to thrive socially, economically, and politically.

Recognising Women’s Contributions

The former minister also used the occasion to celebrate the resilience and achievements of women who continue to break barriers and contribute to national development.

She stressed that across communities in Nigeria and beyond, women remain central to social transformation, economic growth, and family stability.

Edu noted that many women play critical roles in uplifting communities and shaping better futures for younger generations, often while navigating significant challenges.

Call for Renewed Commitment

As part of her message, Edu called on government institutions, private organisations, and civil society groups to strengthen their commitment to advancing opportunities for women and girls.

She emphasised the importance of creating systems that ensure no woman is left behind, particularly those in vulnerable situations who may lack access to education, healthcare, or economic resources.

According to her, empowering women is not only a moral obligation but also a strategic pathway to sustainable development and inclusive progress.

Edu concluded by joining millions of voices around the world in celebrating the achievements of women while encouraging deeper collaboration among stakeholders to build societies where every woman and girl can thrive with dignity, opportunity, and hope.
