The controversy emerged following claims by a journalist from RMC Sport, later echoed in sections of the Spanish media, alleging that Madrid doctors mistakenly examined Mbappé’s healthy right knee instead of his injured left knee in December. The report further suggested that a partial ligament tear initially went undetected as a result.
However, speaking on Wednesday while on international duty with France national football team ahead of a friendly against Brazil national football team, Mbappé firmly rejected the claims.
“The information that they examined the wrong knee is not true,” he said, while acknowledging that limited communication may have contributed to speculation. He noted that clearer updates from his side might have prevented misinterpretations.
The forward emphasized that his relationship with Real Madrid’s medical staff remained transparent throughout his recovery, both during rehabilitation in Madrid and while seeking a second opinion in Paris. He added that he was closely monitored by a team including a doctor, physiotherapist, and club fitness staff.
Mbappé first sustained the injury during a match against Celta Vigo on December 7, but continued to feature in subsequent games against Deportivo Alavés, CF Talavera, and Sevilla FC before a knee sprain was officially confirmed on December 31.
After missing most of the Supercopa de España, he returned briefly in early 2026 but was sidelined again for over three weeks following further evaluation. A consultation with French medical specialists later validated Madrid’s decision to pursue conservative treatment.
Following a period of rest, Mbappé recently made his return as a substitute in a UEFA Champions League clash against Manchester City and featured again in the Madrid derby against Atlético Madrid.
Reflecting on his recovery, Mbappé expressed satisfaction with his current fitness, stating that both knees feel strong and crediting the club for managing his condition effectively. He also stressed the importance of team performance over individual absence, noting that Madrid continued to perform well during his time out.
Now fully fit, the forward says he is ready to feature for France and could start in the upcoming friendly against Brazil, putting to rest concerns over his injury and fitness.
