In a major push to advance sustainable packaging and bolster Nigeria’s recycling industry, Nigerian Breweries Plc has joined a strategic partnership to develop a food-grade recycled polyethylene terephthalate (rPET) production facility in Ogun State.
Filed with the Nigerian Exchange Limited (NGX) on Thursday, the brewer clarified that it will participate as a minority investor, holding a 29% equity stake, without taking part in the operational control or management of the proposed facility.
The recycling initiative will be executed through Indorama Ventures Recycling Solutions Limited, a special purpose vehicle created to develop, own, and operate the facility. The project brings together a consortium of global partners, with Indorama Ventures Public Company Limited serving as the lead partner and Genesis Energy Group contributing as a minority partner.
Indorama Ventures, a global sustainable chemical company, is widely recognized as the world’s leading recycler of PET used in beverage packaging. Genesis Energy Group is expected to provide the necessary infrastructure and energy expertise to support the project’s operations.
According to Nigerian Breweries, the investment aligns with the company’s broader sustainability agenda, while also supporting the growth of Nigeria’s circular economy. The facility is expected to secure a reliable supply of recycled PET materials for the brewer, particularly in light of Nigeria’s move toward mandatory recycled PET usage under the National Policy on Plastic Waste Management.
The company emphasized that the transaction is subject to regulatory approvals, technical validation, and operational implementation. Once operational, the facility is anticipated to strengthen Nigeria’s recycling ecosystem by enabling large-scale plastic waste recovery and promoting environmentally responsible packaging solutions in the beverage sector.
By investing in rPET production, Nigerian Breweries and its partners are positioning themselves at the forefront of the country’s sustainable packaging revolution, advancing both economic and environmental goals.
