Trino Motion Pictures’ critically acclaimed feature film, “The Weekend”, is now streaming on HBO Max, marking a historic milestone as the first independently produced Nigerian thriller to be acquired by the prestigious global platform.

The acquisition signals HBO Max’s growing recognition of the creativity and international appeal of contemporary Nigerian genre cinema.

“The Weekend” is a psychological horror-thriller that explores the tense and dangerous dynamics that emerge when an orphan, Nikiya (Uzoamaka Power), visits the family of her fiancé, Luke (Bucci Franklin). The film blends suspense with incisive social commentary, anchored by a powerhouse ensemble cast that includes Meg Otanwa, Keppy Ekpenyong-Bassey, Gloria Anozie-Young, Damilola Ogunsi, and James Gardiner.

Since its world premiere at the 2024 Tribeca Film Festival—where it became the first independently produced Nigerian film selected—the movie has toured major international festivals, including the BFI London Film Festival and Screamfest, the largest and longest-running horror festival in the United States.

The film has also made waves on the awards circuit, winning the Best Film “Monster Award” at the Monsters Fantastic Film Festival. Domestically, it set a new record at the 2024 Africa Movie Academy Awards with 16 nominations, ultimately taking home awards for Best Film, Best Nigerian Film (NFVCB Award), Best Screenplay, and Best Cinematography.

“The Weekend” exemplifies a growing trend of international platforms embracing bold African storytelling, particularly within the thriller and horror genres. Its global release on HBO Max now opens the door for millions of viewers, including audiences in Central and Eastern Europe, to experience the artistry, authenticity, and narrative depth of Nigeria’s emerging “Midnight” genre cinema.
