The prestigious event, scheduled to hold on Thursday, May 14, at the Lagos Country Club, Ikeja, will bring together top stakeholders across sports, business, marketing, and governance to celebrate excellence and innovation shaping Nigeria’s sports ecosystem.
Organised by SportBusiness & Brands Magazine, the awards ceremony is designed to recognise outstanding sponsors, brands, campaigns, and industry leaders who have significantly contributed to the growth and commercialisation of sports in the country.
Announcing Dikko’s participation, organisers described his presence as a major boost to the event, noting that his leadership at the NSC represents a new era of reform and strategic direction for Nigerian sports.
A respected sports administrator and reform-driven leader, Dikko has built a reputation as one of the key architects of modern sports governance in Nigeria.
Since his appointment by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in October 2024, he has championed policies aimed at repositioning sports as a viable driver of economic growth and national development.
Before his current role, Dikko served as Chairman of the League Management Company, where he led far-reaching reforms that revitalised the Nigerian Professional Football League, improving professionalism, transparency, and commercial viability within the domestic game.
Under his leadership at the NSC, the Commission has prioritised athlete welfare, grassroots and school sports development, institutional reforms, and Nigeria’s global competitiveness in sports.
His vision of a sports-driven economy continues to shape conversations around the commercial potential of the sector.
Speaking ahead of the event, Publisher of SportBusiness & Brands Magazine and Chief Executive Officer of the awards, Ojeikere Aikhoje, described the ceremony as a landmark initiative for the industry.
“This will be the biggest night in Nigeria’s sports industry,” Aikhoje said. “It is the official celebration of leaders, decision-makers, organisations, fan engagement initiatives, sports events, marketing campaigns, sponsorships, and brand activations that have contributed to the development of the sports industry in Nigeria.”
He noted that the awards will recognise campaigns executed between January and December 2025, ensuring that recent achievements and innovations are duly honoured.
Aikhoje also emphasised the importance of celebrating professionals working behind the scenes to drive successful sports campaigns and initiatives.
“From my agency experience, dedicated people work tirelessly to achieve outstanding results. This initiative is designed to celebrate these unsung heroes, tell Nigerian stories, and recognise winning businesses. We believe catalyse greater professionalism within the sports industry,” he added.
The Sports Industry Awards Nigeria will feature multiple categories covering sponsorship impact, corporate partnerships, brand creativity, and leadership in sports business. While some winners will be announced ahead of the event, four major categories will be decided and unveiled on the night.
Beyond the awards, the event is expected to serve as a vital platform for networking, collaboration, and forward-looking discussions on the future of sports commerce in Nigeria.
Stakeholders will have the opportunity to exchange ideas and explore strategies to unlock the vast economic potential within the sector.
Organisers have also disclosed that the full list of award categories will be unveiled in April, further building anticipation among industry players.
As momentum builds towards the awards night, expectations remain high that the event will not only celebrate excellence but also inspire a new era of innovation, investment, and sustainable growth in Nigeria’s sports industry, with Shehu Dikko’s keynote address set to highlight the path forward.
