The National Universities Commission (NUC) has approved 14 postgraduate programmes for Newgate University Minna following a successful verification exercise.

The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Sadiq Yusuf, disclosed this during a press conference held at the institution’s Senate chamber, describing the development as a major milestone for the university.

According to Yusuf, the approval clears the way for the institution to admit its first set of postgraduate students starting from May this year.

He said the approval reflects the university’s readiness to meet national academic standards and will enable the institution to contribute meaningfully to research development and the training of highly skilled professionals.

“The programmes will strengthen research capacity, train high-level professionals and scholars, and contribute to national development through knowledge creation and innovation,” he said.

The Vice-Chancellor noted that the university currently runs 16 undergraduate programmes and has experienced steady growth since its establishment. He added that the student population has increased significantly from about 300 to 2,018 within four years.

Yusuf further explained that the newly approved programmes include Postgraduate Diplomas (PGDs) in Management, Accounting, Finance, Computer Science and Public Health.

Other programmes approved include Master of Science (MSc) degrees in Computing, Cybersecurity, Accounting, Public Health and International Relations, as well as Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees in Computer Science, Cybersecurity, Public Health, Accounting, Management Studies and International Relations.

The approval also covers professional Master’s and Doctorate programmes in Business Administration, Strategic Studies, Development Studies, International Affairs and Diplomacy.

He assured that the university’s Postgraduate School has been structured to deliver research excellence, professional relevance and innovation-driven leadership.

Yusuf encouraged prospective candidates to visit the university’s website or contact the admissions office for further information on the application process.

According to him, the NUC’s approval comes at a time when the demand for quality postgraduate education is increasing across Nigeria, positioning the university to play a greater role in developing specialised skills and research needed for national growth.
