Fresh conversations have emerged around the influence of spirituality in Nigeria’s political space following remarks by veteran Nollywood actor Pete Edochie, who said his prayers contributed to the success of several candidates in the 2023 general elections.
Speaking during a recent visit by popular streamer Peller at his residence in Enugu, the revered film icon disclosed that six politicians who sought his blessings ahead of the polls all went on to win their respective contests.
According to Edochie, the politicians had visited him bearing symbolic gifts, including a ram and kolanuts, in line with traditional practices. He explained that after offering prayers on their behalf, each of them later emerged victorious at the elections.
Reflecting on the experience, the actor attributed the outcome to divine intervention, expressing gratitude for what he described as a consistent pattern of answered prayers. He noted that individuals he has prayed for over time have often succeeded in their pursuits.
Edochie also used the occasion to offer prayers and words of encouragement to Peller, wishing him growth and success in his career. The streamer, in response, expressed appreciation for the warm reception and the blessings he received during the visit.
The remarks have since stirred discussions online, with many weighing in on the perceived role of spiritual endorsement, cultural traditions, and personal beliefs in Nigeria’s political and social life.
