A wave of sporting pride is sweeping across Lagos as the state government prepares to receive a delegation of outstanding young athletes who delivered remarkable performances at the 2026 World School Games Olympia in Doha, Qatar.

Babajide Sanwo-Olu is set to host students from six Lagos schools following their record-breaking achievements at the international competition held from January 29 to 31 in Doha. The athletes competed across the U-11, U-13 and U-15 categories, distinguishing themselves in athletics, football and swimming events against peers from around the world.

According to a statement released by the state government on Monday, participants from Saint Saviour’s School, Grange School, Riverbank School, British International School, Lagos Preparatory & Secondary School, and Corona School displayed exceptional skill, discipline and composure throughout the tournament, earning widespread acclaim for Lagos State on the global stage.

Saint Saviour’s School emerged as the overall winner in the U-11 category, underlining its dominance among younger competitors. Grange School also delivered an impressive showing, finishing second overall in the U-13 division and securing third place in the U-15 category — a testament to the school’s depth and sustained excellence across age groups.

Beyond podium finishes, the governor’s planned reception will spotlight the athletes’ discipline, teamwork, resilience and sportsmanship — qualities the government says reflect the steady revitalisation of the school sports ecosystem in Lagos.

The celebration will extend beyond the World School Games. Sanwo-Olu will also honour Team Lagos athletes who represented Nigeria at the African Youth Games in Angola, further cementing the state’s growing influence in youth sports development across the continent.

For many of the athletes, their journey began at the National Youth Games, where they first donned Lagos colours and produced performances strong enough to secure national selection. That progression reached new heights at the African Youth Games, held in Angola from December 10 to 20, 2025, where Team Lagos athletes — including students from leading institutions such as Greensprings School — rose to continental prominence and made significant contributions to Nigeria’s overall medal tally.

The state government noted that the back-to-back successes at both global and continental competitions affirm the effectiveness of Lagos’ youth sports framework, describing it as competitive domestically and increasingly capable of producing athletes prepared for international responsibility.

Commending the students, Sanwo-Olu described the dual achievements as a watershed moment for Lagos State.

“These achievements are a source of immense pride to the Government and people of Lagos State. They reflect the discipline and dedication of our young athletes and the steady revitalisation of the school sports ecosystem in Lagos, supported by committed parents, educators, coaches and administrators,” the governor said.

Also speaking, the Director-General of the Lagos State Sports Commission, Lekan Fatodu, characterised the performances as a defining milestone for youth and school sports in the state.

“This historic performance by our schools and young athletes is a powerful demonstration of what is possible when talent meets structure, vision and opportunity,” Fatodu said, praising the collective efforts of athletes, coaches, administrators and parents.

The planned reception, the government added, is intended not only as a celebration of excellence but as inspiration to thousands of young students across Lagos — reinforcing the message that academic distinction and sporting achievement can thrive side by side when supported by vision and investment.
