The midrange smartphone segment is becoming increasingly competitive, and Tecno is making a strong push to reposition its Camon series beyond its traditional budget perception. With the launch of the Tecno Camon 50 Ultra, the company is aiming to challenge more established Android brands by combining premium-inspired features with relatively accessible pricing.

High Refresh Display and Refined Design

At the front, the Camon 50 Ultra features a 6.78-inch AMOLED display with a resolution of 1208 x 2644 pixels, delivering sharp visuals and vibrant colors. A standout feature is its 144Hz refresh rate—an upgrade over the more common 120Hz found in most smartphones within this category—offering smoother scrolling and improved responsiveness, particularly during gaming and high-frame-rate content.

The display is protected by Gorilla Glass Victus 2 and houses an in-display fingerprint scanner for biometric authentication.

Design-wise, Tecno opts for a curved, rounded aesthetic rather than the flat-edged trend seen in many modern devices. The rear panel uses Gorilla Glass 7i, while the frame is constructed from plastic. The device is available in multiple color options, including Moonshadow Black, Cypress Green, Nebula Titanium, Luminous Orange, and Misty Purple.

Audio is handled via stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos support, although the absence of a 3.5mm headphone jack means users will need to rely on wireless or USB-C audio solutions. A customizable “One Tap” button is also included, allowing quick access to frequently used functions.

Solid Midrange Performance with Large Battery Capacity

Under the hood, the Camon 50 Ultra is powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 7400 Ultimate chipset, positioning it firmly within the midrange performance tier. The processor is capable of handling everyday tasks and demanding mobile games such as Genshin Impact and Call of Duty Mobile with relative ease.

The device comes in configurations of 8GB or 12GB of RAM, paired with storage options ranging from 256GB to 512GB. However, there is no support for expandable storage.

One of the device’s strongest selling points is its 6,500mAh battery—significantly larger than what is typically found in even premium devices like the Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra and Google Pixel 10 Pro XL. Charging is supported at 45W, allowing for relatively quick top-ups despite the large battery size.

Android 16 with AI-Driven Features

On the software side, the phone runs Android 16 with Tecno’s custom HIOS 16 layered on top. The interface includes a suite of proprietary apps alongside standard Google services.

Tecno promises up to three major Android updates, potentially extending support through Android 19—an appealing factor for users who plan to keep their devices long-term.

AI integration is a key focus, with features such as an AI wallpaper generator, real-time translation, writing assistance, and photo editing tools like object removal. The built-in AI assistant, Ella, offers conversational voice interaction, although it requires an internet connection to function.

Versatile Camera System

Photography is another area where the Camon 50 Ultra aims to stand out. The rear setup includes:

  • A 50MP main sensor with Optical Image Stabilization (OIS)
  • A 50MP telephoto lens with 3x optical zoom
  • An 8MP ultrawide camera with a 112° field of view

The camera system supports features like HDR and panorama, with video recording capped at 4K at 30fps for the main and telephoto lenses.

On the front, users get a 50MP selfie camera capable of recording 4K video at up to 60fps, making it suitable for content creation and high-quality video calls.

Balancing Strengths and Trade-Offs

The Camon 50 Ultra delivers a compelling mix of features: a high-refresh-rate display, capable performance, a large battery, and a flexible camera system—all at a price point below $500.

However, it does come with some compromises. The lack of expandable storage and a headphone jack may be limiting for some users, and while AI features add modern appeal, they may not resonate with everyone.

Outlook

The device reflects a broader shift in strategy from Tecno, as it seeks to compete more directly with mainstream smartphone brands. While short-term appeal may be driven by its aggressive specifications and pricing, long-term success will likely depend on sustained software support, real-world performance, and user experience.

Overall, the Camon 50 Ultra positions itself as a strong contender in the midrange category—particularly for users seeking premium-like features without flagship-level pricing.
