The University of Glasgow has unveiled the African Excellence Award, a scholarship programme aimed at supporting outstanding students from across Africa who wish to pursue postgraduate studies in the United Kingdom.

According to information published on the university’s official website, the scholarship will cover full tuition fees for selected candidates admitted into eligible master’s programmes. The institution plans to award up to 16 scholarships to African students enrolling for the 2026/2027 academic session.

The African Excellence Award is designed to encourage high-achieving students from the continent to advance their academic and professional development through postgraduate education, while equipping them with the knowledge and skills needed to make meaningful contributions to their communities.

Eligibility and application process

The scholarship is open to applicants who demonstrate academic excellence equivalent to a UK First-Class Honours degree and who have applied for a postgraduate taught master’s programme scheduled to begin in September 2026.

Prospective candidates must also meet several additional criteria. Applicants are required to have international fee status, be domiciled in Africa, and hold a passport from an eligible African country.

While students may submit their scholarship application before receiving an admission offer from the university, the institution stated that candidates must secure a formal offer of admission before they can be invited for a scholarship interview.

Successful applicants will also need to meet the living cost and financial requirements set by the UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI), as the award covers tuition fees but does not automatically exempt recipients from visa-related financial requirements.

Programme scope and deadlines

The university clarified that the award is strictly limited to postgraduate taught master’s programmes, meaning postgraduate diploma and certificate courses are not eligible for the scholarship.

Applications for the African Excellence Award will close at 23:59 (UK time) on March 31, 2026, while shortlisted applicants are expected to be notified by May 8, 2026.

In a statement describing the initiative, the university said the programme aims to support “high-achieving students from across Africa in their journey to become future world changers.”
