Nollywood stalwart Joke Silva has been named Head Judge for the 12th edition of the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA), set to take place on Saturday, May 9, 2026.

The announcement was made at a press briefing on Thursday, March 26, 2026, at the MultiChoice studio in Ilupeju, Lagos, as preparations intensify for what promises to be one of the most star-studded editions of the awards yet.

Atinuke Babatunde, Executive Head of Content and Channels at MultiChoice West Africa, emphasized the deeper significance of the AMVCAs beyond glamour and red carpets. “Beyond the lights, the red carpet, and the applause, there is a deeper story—one of craftsmanship. The writers, the directors, the editors, the designers, the technicians—the many hands and minds that shape the stories we love. This year, we are being as intentional as we’ve always been about recognising that ecosystem of excellence,” she said.

This edition of the AMVCA also introduces key changes to broaden its pan-African reach and ensure equitable representation. The awards now include two new Indigenous Language categories: Best Indigenous Language – North Africa and Best Indigenous Language – Central Africa. The move highlights a commitment to celebrating Africa’s diverse linguistic and cultural landscape on a continental platform.

Babatunde added, “We are celebrating culture in all its richness and authenticity. From Lagos to Nairobi, from Dakar to Johannesburg, African stories continue to reflect who we are, how we live, and how we connect with the world.”

The 12th AMVCA will feature 32 award categories, including 18 jury-decided awards, 11 public voting categories, and three special recognition awards for Lifetime Achievement and Trailblazer. Don Julio leads as the event’s headline sponsor, with co-sponsorship from Guinness, Singleton, Onga, Johnnie Walker, Orijin, MTN, Smirnoff Ice, QuickTeller, Verve, Indomie, and Lush Hair.

Nominees for this year’s awards will be announced live on Africa Magic channels on Sunday, March 29, 2026, at 7 PM, with AMVCA-winning actor Chiemezie Imo hosting the broadcast.

Since its inception in 2013, the AMVCAs have become a cornerstone of Africa’s creative industry, fostering job creation and economic growth. Over the past decade, the awards have contributed to the creation of over 30,000 jobs across various sectors, benefiting professionals from production designers and screenwriters to sound engineers and artisans, while providing a stage for Africa’s leading films and television productions to be recognised and celebrated.
