Nigerian singer Alexander Adegbola Akande, popularly known as 9ice, has sparked controversy after questioning the effectiveness of Christianity and Islam in improving Nigeria’s social and economic conditions.
Speaking at a recent event covered by Gold Myne TV, the Gongo Aso crooner argued that frequent prayers and religious observances have not translated into meaningful progress for the country.
“You will leave Nigeria and go to Mecca to lick rock all in the name of Kabba. Ever since you have been calling on Allah and Jesus, this country hasn’t gotten any better,” 9ice stated. “If you go to London, nobody goes to church there yet they are better than Nigeria. They go to work on Sundays, but Nigerians go to church. A lot of Nigerians spend most of their time in church in the name of weekly services. They pray over everything, including things that should fix themselves.”
The singer, a self-described traditionalist, has previously discussed his embrace of indigenous beliefs. In an August 2025 interview with Nancy Isime, he revealed that he turned to traditional religion after an Ifa priest healed him from a “spiritual attack” that left him vomiting blood for six months. He expressed regret for not adopting traditional practices sooner.
9ice’s remarks have reignited discussions about religion, cultural identity, and national development in Nigeria, prompting a mix of support, criticism, and debate across social media and public forums.
