World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka suffered a dramatic quarter-final exit at the Madrid Open after a shock 2-6, 6-2, 7-6 (8-6) defeat to 30th seed Hailey Baptiste, marking one of the biggest upsets of the tournament.

The victory represented a career-defining breakthrough for Baptiste, who claimed her first win over a top-five opponent and saved an astonishing six match points in a tense, high-quality encounter lasting two hours and 32 minutes.

Sabalenka, a three-time Madrid champion and defending titleholder, started strongly and appeared in control early on. She broke Baptiste twice to comfortably take the opening set 6-2, asserting her dominance with aggressive baseline play.

However, the momentum shifted in the second set as Baptiste responded with two early breaks of her own. Although Sabalenka briefly regained footing by breaking back to close the gap to 4-2, she immediately surrendered her next service game, allowing Baptiste to level the match with a 6-2 set win.

The deciding set delivered sustained drama, with both players exchanging breaks multiple times. Sabalenka looked poised to close out the match, earning five match points in Baptiste’s service game at 5-4, but the American showed remarkable composure to save them all and force a tiebreak.

Baptiste then moved ahead 6-5 in the final set after breaking Sabalenka, but was unable to serve out the match as the world No. 1 broke back to level at 6-6, setting up a tense tiebreak finale.

In the breaker, Sabalenka earned a sixth match point at 6-5, but Baptiste surged through the final stretch, winning the last three points to complete a stunning comeback victory and seal her place in the semi-finals.

Speaking after the match, an emotional Baptiste said: “Incredible. Super proud of myself. It was a super tight match, 7-6 in the third. Had to fight off match points; I’m really happy right now.”

She added that the result validated her long-held belief in her abilities: “It just shows me where my game lies. I’ve always believed it. Now I’m starting to put it into action and the world is seeing it as well.”

The result continues a turbulent run at the WTA 1000 clay event, where several major shocks have seen the top seven seeds eliminated.

Baptiste will now face world No. 9 Mirra Andreeva in the semi-finals after the Russian defeated Canada’s Leylah Fernandez 7-6 (7-1), 6-3 earlier on Tuesday.
