The 29-year-old was stretchered off the pitch wearing a neck brace following a heavy collision with an opposing player from Palermo FC during Saturday’s fixture. He was subsequently transported to a hospital in Palermo for evaluation.
In an official statement, Cesena confirmed that initial medical examinations revealed a fracture to Klinsmann’s first cervical vertebra, along with a laceration to the back of his head. The club added that he will undergo further assessment by a specialist neurosurgeon to determine the full extent of the injury and recovery plan.
Klinsmann later addressed supporters via social media, confirming that his season has come to an early end. He expressed gratitude to both Cesena and Palermo fans for their support, as well as to friends and family who have assisted him in recent days.
The Munich-born goalkeeper is the son of former Germany international striker and coach Jürgen Klinsmann. Over the course of his career, he has had spells in Major League Soccer with the LA Galaxy and has represented the United States at youth international level.
Klinsmann was also called up to the U.S. senior squad for friendlies in September 2025 but did not feature in matches against South Korea and Japan. While considered an outside contender, he had been in the wider frame for selection ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Since joining Cesena two years ago, Klinsmann has made over 50 appearances for the club. The Serie B side is currently managed by former England international defender Ashley Cole.
