Emerging Nigerian music act Dan RicheE is drawing attention with his latest release Akonuche, a track that reimagines highlife tradition through his evolving “New Skool Ogene (NSO)” sound system.

The record sits at the centre of his developing artistic direction, which merges indigenous African rhythms with modern production techniques to create a structured, contemporary sonic identity. Rather than leaning on nostalgia alone, the approach focuses on reshaping cultural elements into a format designed for today’s global audience.

Built on guitar-led highlife influences, Akonuche reconstructs familiar traditional patterns within a refreshed musical framework. The production introduces updated percussion layers and modern arrangement styles while retaining the emotional resonance often associated with classic highlife music.

Dan RicheE described his creative process around the project, explaining: “I approached Akonuche to understand its foundation and reposition it within a modern system.”

Beyond its production style, the track also carries introspective lyrical themes, touching on self-awareness, discipline, and personal direction. The songwriting shifts away from conventional storytelling, instead favouring a reflective tone that centres on identity and growth.

The release also reflects his broader ambition for the New Skool Ogene concept — a developing sonic identity aimed at modernising African cultural sounds without disconnecting them from their origins. According to the artist, the goal is not to preserve the past as it is, but to evolve it into something forward-facing and globally relevant.

As African music continues its international expansion, Akonuche joins a growing body of work by new-generation artists reinterpreting heritage sounds while building distinct creative identities within the contemporary music landscape.
