The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control has issued a public warning over the circulation of unregistered and suspected counterfeit toothpaste products resembling the popular Colgate brand, following a new enforcement operation triggered by consumer complaints in Kaduna State.

In a statement posted on its official X handle, the agency said its Post-Marketing Surveillance Directorate launched an investigation after receiving reports of suspicious products being sold within the state.

During a market inspection, officials reportedly discovered two products labelled “Coglaet ActivGel 100g” and “Coglaet Herbal 100g,” which closely mimic the branding of Colgate toothpaste but are not registered with the regulatory authority.

According to the agency, the shop owner where the items were found claimed they were supplied through a door-to-door sales agent, though no purchase documentation was provided to verify their source.

The regulator stated that the products failed to meet required safety and quality standards, warning that they could pose potential health risks to consumers.

The affected items were identified as “Coglaet Crema Dental Herbal 100g” and “Coglaet ActivGel 100g,” both lacking batch numbers and official registration details. They were allegedly labelled as being manufactured by Guangzhou YECAI Oral Cleaning Products Co., Ltd in Baiyun District, Guangzhou, China, with production dates of August 2025 and expiry dates set for August 2029.

The agency confirmed that the products have been withdrawn from circulation while investigations continue to trace their distribution network.

It further directed all zonal directors and state coordinators to intensify surveillance and carry out mop-up operations to remove any remaining stock from markets across the country.

Consumers, distributors, and retailers were advised to exercise heightened caution, verify product authenticity before purchase, and avoid items without proper regulatory identification.

NAFDAC also urged the public to report suspected counterfeit or substandard products through its hotline, email platform, or physical offices. Health professionals and consumers experiencing adverse reactions were encouraged to report via its official channels, including the Med-Safety application.
