A renewed sense of artistic energy filled the National Theatre Lagos over the weekend, as audiences gathered for a thought-provoking stage production that signaled the start of a fresh programming chapter at the iconic venue.

Held at the Queen Amina Garden on Saturday, April 4, 2025, Dis_loyal Judas brought together theatre enthusiasts for an evening of layered storytelling, movement, and live performance. The production, written and directed by Segun Adefila, offered a bold reinterpretation of a well-known biblical narrative, reframing it through contemporary artistic expression.

A Fusion of Art Forms and Ideas

Performed by the Crown Troupe of Africa, the play combined drama, dance, dialogue, and physical theatre to explore enduring themes such as betrayal, destiny, sacrifice, and the complexity of human nature.

Rather than presenting Judas as a one-dimensional symbol of treachery, the production invites the audience to reconsider his role through a more human lens—prompting reflection on morality, choice, and fate.

A New Vision for the National Theatre

For the management of the National Theatre, the event represents more than a single performance—it marks the beginning of a broader cultural revival.

Speaking at the event, General Manager Adetola Akerele described the production as part of a strategic effort to reinvigorate the venue’s programming and reestablish it as a vibrant hub for the performing arts.

She noted that the collaboration with Crown Troupe builds on an existing relationship and reflects a commitment to elevating creative output at the theatre. According to her, this season will feature a diverse lineup of events, including interactive drumming sessions, children-focused programming, and an animation festival.

Akerele also revealed plans for an upcoming musical production titled I Wish, I Wish, which will be staged in the main bowl of the complex—further underscoring the ambition to restore the venue’s prominence.

Industry Support and Growing Momentum

The renewed activity has not gone unnoticed within the theatre community. Adeniran Makinde of the National Association of Nigerian Theatre Arts Practitioners commended both the production and the broader efforts to revive the space.

Having seen Dis_loyal Judas multiple times, he observed noticeable artistic growth in the performance and praised the National Theatre’s current direction as a sign of meaningful progress within the sector.

Theatre as a Space for Reflection

For Adefila, the significance of Dis_loyal Judas lies in its ability to challenge conventional narratives. Drawing inspiration from the story of Jesus Christ, he emphasized the importance of using theatre to interrogate familiar ideas and uncover deeper truths.

The production, he explained, does not seek to justify betrayal but to explore the emotional and philosophical dimensions behind human actions. By presenting Judas as a complex individual rather than a fixed archetype, the play encourages audiences to engage with difficult questions about destiny, responsibility, and compassion.

Reviving a Cultural Landmark

Beyond the performance itself, Adefila highlighted the importance of sustained institutional support in revitalizing the arts. He described the National Theatre as a vital home for creative expression and commended its leadership for fostering opportunities despite ongoing challenges.

As the new season unfolds, the success of Dis_loyal Judas suggests a promising path forward—one where storytelling, collaboration, and audience engagement converge to restore the theatre’s cultural significance in Nigeria and beyond.
