Produced by Fremantle’s Emmy-winning label 72 Films, “The Michael Jackson Story” has been acquired by broadcasters spanning Europe, Oceania, Asia, and the Middle East. Countries confirmed include France, the Netherlands, Italy, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Belgium, Greece, Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong, and several Middle Eastern territories.
The series is built on rare archival material and in-depth interviews with individuals closely connected to the late pop icon. Contributors include his sister La Toya Jackson, music legend Dionne Warwick, former manager Dieter Wiesner, bodyguard Bill Whitfield, family attorney Brian Oxman, and prosecutor Ron Zonen.
Described by Fremantle as a deeply researched portrait, the documentary aims to present a comprehensive narrative of Jackson’s life—tracing his meteoric rise, artistic achievements, personal struggles, and enduring cultural impact. The production also revisits longstanding controversies surrounding the artist, including allegations he consistently denied, while examining how his estate continues to generate significant revenue and influence.
Commissioned by the BBC, the series will premiere in the United Kingdom under the title “Michael Jackson: An American Tragedy.” It is scheduled to air on BBC Two and stream via BBC iPlayer.
International distribution partners include major broadcasters such as France Télévisions, NPO, Nine Network, Sky TV, Sky Italia, Asharq News, Vodafone Greece, Now TV, Sveriges Television, DR, YLE, and VRT.
Fremantle’s Global Head of Documentaries and Factual, Mark Reynolds, described the project as a nuanced exploration of fame, family, and legacy, highlighting the production team’s careful and insightful approach.
Directed by filmmaker Sophie Fuller and commissioned by Simon Young, the series is part of Fremantle’s expanding documentary slate. The company continues to invest heavily in non-scripted content, with productions spanning more than 20 labels across 13 territories worldwide.
