In a move that signals a growing interest in controlling the narrative around artificial intelligence, OpenAI has acquired TBPN, a fast-rising online tech talk show known for its in-depth interviews with top Silicon Valley executives.

The acquisition places OpenAI in closer competition with rivals such as Anthropic, particularly in the race to attract enterprise customers and influence how businesses understand and adopt AI technologies.

TBPN, founded in late 2024 by entrepreneurs John Coogan and Jordi Hays, quickly built a loyal following by featuring candid conversations with industry leaders. Both founders will join OpenAI as part of the deal, though financial terms were not disclosed.

The move comes as a surprise, given that OpenAI had not previously indicated ambitions in the media or news space. Instead, the company had recently been narrowing its focus to core growth areas, including AI-powered coding tools, even pausing development emphasis on projects such as its video-generation model Sora.

According to OpenAI, the acquisition is less about entering traditional media and more about improving how it communicates its vision and participates in broader discussions about the societal and economic impact of AI. The company noted that TBPN will retain its editorial independence, positioning the platform as a credible, semi-autonomous voice within the tech ecosystem.

In its newsletter, The Prompt, OpenAI framed the move as part of a longstanding pattern in which major corporations integrate media arms into their operations. It pointed to examples such as Microsoft’s involvement in MSNBC and Bloomberg LP’s ownership of Bloomberg News, arguing that such structures can coexist with editorial credibility.

The acquisition also comes at a sensitive moment for OpenAI, which has faced criticism over its agreement with the U.S. government to deploy its technology in classified military contexts. The backlash has intensified scrutiny of how AI companies engage with public institutions and communicate their intentions—making control over messaging channels increasingly strategic.

TBPN has hosted a roster of high-profile guests, including Mark Zuckerberg of Meta, Satya Nadella, filmmaker James Cameron, and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. Its access to influential voices has made it a notable platform for shaping conversations around innovation, leadership, and the future of technology.

By bringing TBPN into its fold, OpenAI appears to be expanding its strategy beyond product development into narrative influence—recognising that in the rapidly evolving AI landscape, shaping public understanding may be as critical as building the technology itself.
