Nigerian Afrobeats star Rema has opened up about the emotional and personal toll of rising to fame at a very young age, suggesting that his early breakthrough came with experiences he now views as exploitative and deeply unsettling.

The 25-year-old artist, born Divine Ikubor, rose to prominence after signing with Mavin Records and releasing his breakout EP in 2019 at just 19 years old. Since then, he has become one of Nigeria’s most globally recognized music exports, but his recent comments indicate that the journey to stardom was far from straightforward.

In lyrics from his new collaboration with French pianist Sofiane Pamart titled “Moviestar,” Rema revisits his early years in the spotlight, describing a loss of innocence and a sense of emotional manipulation tied to sudden fame.

He suggests that fame exposed him to unhealthy influences, including encounters where he felt taken advantage of. In the song, he sings: “Girls always give me drugs / My happiness is zipped in their little purse / Friends always make me feel robbed…,” lines that portray a mix of vulnerability, distrust, and emotional exhaustion.

Rema further reflects that fans often overlook the personal struggles behind his public image, noting that many do not understand the depth of what he went through because, in his words, he “got caught up so young.”

He also alludes to the pressures that followed his record deal, implying that expectations from the music industry left little room for emotional wellbeing, as he was pushed to continually perform and deliver music for audiences without adequate regard for his mental state.

The revelations add a more introspective layer to his artistry, highlighting the often unseen psychological weight of early fame in the entertainment industry—particularly for young artists who transition rapidly from obscurity to global recognition.

While Rema continues to enjoy international success, the themes in “Moviestar” suggest a growing willingness to confront and articulate the personal costs that accompanied his rise in the music world.
