The RIRS) has announced an extension of the deadline for filing annual personal income tax returns, shifting the date to April 17, 2026, in a bid to improve compliance among taxpayers.
The extension was communicated in a public notice issued on Wednesday and signed by the agency’s Executive Chairman, Israel Egbunefu. According to the statement, the decision is intended to provide additional time for individuals and businesses yet to meet their tax obligations.
Egbunefu urged all taxable persons—including employees in both public and private sectors, entrepreneurs, self-employed individuals, and professionals—to take advantage of the extended window to file their 2025 Year of Assessment returns.
He also directed taxpayers to submit their returns exclusively through the service’s official online portal to ensure proper processing and documentation.
While the extension offers temporary relief, the RIRS boss cautioned that failure to comply before the revised deadline would result in penalties as stipulated by law. He noted that the measure forms part of ongoing efforts to strengthen tax compliance and boost internally generated revenue in Rivers State.
