Former Super Eagles stars Samson Siasia and Daniel Amokachi are among the coaches who have officially applied for the vacant U-23 Eagles position, previously held by assistant coach Salisu Yusuf.
Siasia’s Proven Olympic Pedigree
Siasia stands out as one of the most accomplished candidates, having previously managed the U-23 side in two separate spells. His track record includes leading Nigeria to a silver medal at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, where the team reached the final before falling short against Argentina.
He later returned to guide the squad to a bronze medal finish at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, reinforcing his reputation as a coach with deep familiarity with youth development and international tournament football.
Amokachi Brings Experience and Legacy
Also in contention is Amokachi, a former Super Eagles striker known for his influential playing career and prior involvement with Nigeria’s age-grade teams. At 53, he brings both coaching experience and a strong connection to the national football structure, having previously handled the U-23 setup in earlier years.
High Stakes for Nigeria’s Next Generation
The U-23 role is widely regarded as a critical pathway for grooming players into the senior national team, the Super Eagles. With Olympic qualification and youth development at stake, the Nigerian football authorities are expected to weigh experience, tactical vision, and player development credentials heavily in their decision.
Both Siasia and Amokachi carry strong football pedigrees, but the final appointment will ultimately depend on which candidate aligns best with Nigeria’s long-term development strategy for its next generation of talent.
