Sports Industry Awards Nigeria Set to Celebrate FirstBank’s Enduring Influence on Nigerian Sports Development.

The upcoming edition of the Sports Industry Awards Nigeria is poised to spotlight long-standing excellence in sports sponsorship and development, with First Bank of Nigeria Limited emerging as one of the major honourees for its decades-long impact on the country’s sporting ecosystem.

Scheduled for Tuesday, May 19, in Lagos, the ceremony will bring together key stakeholders across Nigeria’s sports value chain to recognise achievements spanning sponsorship, marketing innovation, event delivery, and strategic partnerships recorded between January and December 2025.

The awards, jointly organised by sports management firm MatchRoom Sports & Media Limited in partnership with SPORTBUSINESS & Brands magazine, are widely regarded as one of the country’s leading platforms for acknowledging excellence and measurable contribution within the sports industry.

At the centre of this year’s recognition is FirstBank’s longstanding and multi-layered investment in sports development, which has evolved from historic patronage to modern, innovation-driven initiatives. The bank’s sports sponsorship journey is anchored on a legacy that stretches back over a century, including its association with polo through the Georgian Cup at the Kaduna Polo Club since 1919—one of the longest-running sports sponsorships globally.

Beyond polo, FirstBank has maintained sustained support for both football and basketball in Nigeria through institutional club sponsorships that have shaped talent development pathways and competitive participation at national and continental levels. This commitment is further amplified through its First@Sports initiative, designed to drive broader engagement and development across multiple sporting disciplines.

In recent years, the institution also played a visible role in elevating Nigeria’s global sports profile, notably as sponsor of the continent’s first E1 Lagos Grand Prix, an electric powerboat racing event that positioned Lagos as a focal point for innovation, sustainability, and sports tourism on the African continent.

Its football arm, the FirstBank Football Club—popularly known as the “Elephant Boys”—has produced notable athletes including Fatai Amoo, Sam Nwobum, Lookman Oshun, and Wasiu Ipaye, many of whom went on to represent Nigeria at various competitive levels. The team has also maintained a consistent presence in Nigeria Football Federation league structures for more than four decades, competing alongside established sides such as Shooting Stars, Rangers International, and Calabar Rovers.

Equally, the FirstBank Basketball Club, known as the “Elephant Girls,” has built an impressive competitive record over the past three decades, highlighted by continental championship victories in 2003 and 2009, as well as participation in the 2025 Women’s Basketball League Africa.

Speaking on the recognition, CEO of the Sports Industry Awards Nigeria, Ojeikere Aikhoje, commended the institution’s sustained commitment to sports development and innovation-driven sponsorship models. He noted that FirstBank’s approach has consistently combined legacy investment with contemporary relevance, particularly through its dual support for football and basketball at the domestic level.

He also emphasised the rarity of such long-term corporate engagement within Nigerian sports, describing FirstBank as one of the few financial institutions maintaining direct sponsorship of professional sports clubs over multiple decades.

In addition to its honorary recognition, FirstBank has also been shortlisted in competitive categories including Sports Sponsor of the Year and Sports Event of the Year, reflecting the breadth of its engagement across the industry.

The award ceremony will be hosted at the Lagos Country Club in Ikeja GRA, bringing together athletes, administrators, sponsors, and industry professionals for an evening dedicated to celebrating excellence and shaping the future direction of sports in Nigeria.
