The announcement, made Thursday via social media, confirms Roig’s arrival as a replacement for Wim Fissette, whose partnership with Świątek ended in late March after a surprising defeat to compatriot Magda Linette in Miami.
Roig brings a wealth of experience, having spent years as a key figure within Rafael Nadal’s coaching setup. His appointment comes shortly after Świątek trained in Manacor at Nadal’s renowned academy, signaling a deliberate move to align herself with the philosophy and structure that underpinned the Spaniard’s success.
The 24-year-old Polish star has been in a period of tactical and stylistic transition. During her 18-month collaboration with Fissette, Świątek captured a Wimbledon title and began recalibrating her playing style—blending her natural counterpunching instincts with a more aggressive, first-strike approach developed earlier under Tomasz Wiktorowski.
While that attacking blueprint yielded remarkable results—including four Grand Slam titles, a 37-match winning streak, and over 100 weeks atop the rankings—it has also shown vulnerabilities under pressure. In key moments, Świątek has at times overcommitted to high-risk shot-making, leading to costly unforced errors.
Recent comments suggest she is now seeking greater balance and resilience, aiming to become what she described as “a wall” on court—minimizing free points for opponents and emphasizing consistency over outright aggression.
Roig’s technical expertise could prove pivotal in that evolution. Known for his meticulous approach, the 58-year-old is expected to focus on improving Świątek’s serve, an area that has shown both promise and inconsistency. Despite progress under Fissette—particularly in targeting and precision—the serve has remained prone to breakdowns, especially under sustained pressure.
Such lapses have occasionally triggered a chain reaction: difficulty holding serve leading to rushed point construction, which in turn increases error rates. Addressing these patterns will likely be central to Roig’s mandate.
After departing Nadal’s camp in 2022—where he contributed to all 22 of the Spaniard’s Grand Slam titles alongside figures like Carlos Moyá and Marc López—Roig went on to coach Matteo Berrettini and briefly worked with Emma Raducanu.
Świątek is expected to debut her new coaching setup at the upcoming Stuttgart Tennis Grand Prix, which begins April 11, as she looks to stabilize her form and reinforce her position among the sport’s elite.
