The partnership marks one of the largest enterprise-scale deployments of Anthropic’s AI tools in the pharmaceutical sector. Bristol Myers said the integration will go beyond basic chat-based use cases, embedding Claude into scientific workflows and internal operations.
The company also plans to deploy Claude Code, Anthropic’s programming-focused AI tool, while evaluating its use across research, drug development, manufacturing, and commercial and medical affairs functions.
“Most enterprise AI stops at the chatbot. The real prize is the untapped value still trapped behind decades of data silos, and this collaboration is how we reach it,” said Greg Meyers, chief digital and technology officer at Bristol Myers Squibb.
Pharma industry races to embed AI in R&D pipelines
The deal reflects a wider industry shift as pharmaceutical companies race to integrate artificial intelligence into drug discovery processes, aiming to improve efficiency and increase the success rate of clinical development.
Drugmakers have increasingly struck partnerships with leading AI and technology firms. Eli Lilly and Company has already teamed up with chipmaker Nvidia, betting that advanced computing can improve how quickly and accurately new treatments are identified and tested.
Agentic AI seen as next productivity leap
Attention is also shifting toward “agentic AI,” systems capable of performing tasks with minimal human intervention. Consultancy McKinsey & Company estimates that such tools could raise clinical development productivity by roughly 35% to 45% over the next five years.
The broader trend highlights how artificial intelligence is moving from experimental pilots to core operational infrastructure across the pharmaceutical industry, with companies increasingly viewing it as a lever to compress timelines and reduce the high cost of drug development.
