Garcia revealed the matchup during an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, where he initially teased that his next opponent was “from the other side,” prompting confusion from host Jimmy Fallon, who jokingly wondered whether the rival came from outer space.
“No, he’s from across the pond. I’ll just say his name: Conor Benn,” Garcia clarified, adding pointedly, “He’s talking a lot.”
The American champion, 27, did not hold back when discussing tensions between the two fighters, recalling a past encounter at an awards event.
“He pressed up on me, grabbed me, so it’s a little personal,” Garcia said.
“I’m going to really put a whopping on this man, and we will send him back to the UK sipping on some tea.”
The bout marks Garcia’s first title defence after he captured the WBC welterweight belt in February with a dominant performance over Mario Barrios, scoring a wide unanimous decision victory and scoring a knockdown in the opening round.
On the other side, Benn enters the fight with renewed momentum after a turbulent but eventful run. The British fighter, who holds a 25-1 record with 14 knockouts, returned to action with a victory over former 140lbs world champion Regis Prograis, winning by unanimous decision on April 26.
Benn also comes off a high-profile rivalry with Chris Eubank Jr, having split two headline bouts at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium—fights that drew massive attention, with their first meeting widely regarded as one of the standout boxing events of the year.
The British star, now signed under a multi-fight deal with Zuffa Boxing, currently holds mandatory challenger status for Garcia’s WBC belt, strengthening his position as the natural opponent for the champion.
Despite that status, Benn has made it clear he is open to multiple elite-level options if negotiations falter.
“There are a lot of fighters calling me out, big names calling me out,” Benn said in a recent interview.
“Of course, it is the priority to get that Garcia fight done, but I am not short of options.”
Zuffa Boxing chief Dana White has also expressed support for the matchup, describing it as the type of high-profile fight the organisation wants to deliver.
“All the guys that have signed with us — we say what have you dreamed about, what do you want to do, what have been the plans with your career?” White said.
“Obviously, I am about making the biggest fights you can possibly make.”
With both fighters young, outspoken, and in strong form, the September clash is already shaping up as a high-stakes collision that blends rivalry, title implications, and major global attention.
