Nigeria’s political, military and business elite gathered in Abuja on Tuesday for the public presentation of former Head of State Yakubu Gowon’s autobiography, My Life of Duty and Allegiance, an event marked by generous donations and tributes to decades of public service.

Leading the list of donors was former Minister of Defence, Theophilus Danjuma, who pledged a staggering N3 billion in support of the book launch.

The event also witnessed major contributions from some of Nigeria’s biggest business figures. Billionaire industrialist Aliko Dangote donated N500 million, while businessman Abdul Samad Rabiu purchased copies of the autobiography worth N25 million.

The launch ceremony attracted top government officials, diplomats, senior military officers and notable personalities from across the country, reflecting the enduring influence of Gowon in Nigeria’s history and public life.

Representing President Bola Tinubu at the occasion was Vice President Kashim Shettima, who joined guests in celebrating the legacy of the former military leader.

The autobiography, structured into 20 chapters, chronicles Gowon’s early life, military journey, leadership during a critical period in Nigeria’s history, and his years of national service after leaving office. The memoir also offers personal reflections on duty, leadership and national unity.

The Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Matthew Kukah, delivered a review of the book during the ceremony, describing the memoir as an important contribution to Nigeria’s historical documentation.

Although Danjuma served as chief presenter for the unveiling, he was represented at the event by former Chief of Defence Staff, retired General Martin Luther Agwai.

Beyond his N3 billion donation, Danjuma also directed that 12 copies of the autobiography be purchased for each of the 20 universities that have awarded Gowon honorary doctorate degrees. The books are expected to be distributed to the institutions’ libraries to preserve the former leader’s account for future generations of scholars and researchers.

The launch not only celebrated the release of Gowon’s memoir but also underscored the continued reverence for one of Nigeria’s most prominent statesmen, whose leadership remains a significant chapter in the country’s political and military history.
