Lagos State University has once again emerged as the most preferred tertiary institution in Nigeria, maintaining its lead for the second consecutive year and reinforcing its growing reputation among students and parents nationwide.

According to figures released by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board during the 2026 JAMB Policy Meeting in Abuja, LASU recorded 84,326 first-choice applications, placing it ahead of other top institutions in the country.

The University of Lagos followed with 78,240 applications, while Obafemi Awolowo University recorded 60,370 applications, reflecting continued strong competition among Nigeria’s leading universities.

In a statement shared via its official social media platforms, LASU described the milestone as confirmation of its status as Nigeria’s “University of First Choice,” attributing the surge in applications to growing public confidence in its academic standards and institutional stability.

The university noted that its rising appeal reflects improvements in teaching quality, research output, infrastructure development, and adoption of technology-driven learning systems.

It also credited its consistent academic calendar and student-focused administration as key factors contributing to increased interest from prospective applicants.

LASU highlighted its rapid climb in national rankings over the past few admission cycles, moving from outside the top 10 before 2023 to third place in 2023 with over 55,000 applications, second place in 2024 with 62,601 applications, and now first place in 2025 and 2026 with over 70,000 and 84,326 applications respectively.

The institution described the latest figure as further evidence of its expanding influence within Nigeria’s higher education landscape and across Africa.

Vice-Chancellor Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello expressed appreciation to the Lagos State Government for its continued support, while also commending staff and students for their contributions to the university’s rising profile.

She said the achievement aligns with LASU’s long-term vision of becoming a globally competitive institution driven by excellence, innovation, integrity, and quality education.

“We will continue to maintain high standards in teaching, research, community service, and human capital development,” she noted.

Olatunji-Bello also reassured prospective students that the university remains committed to providing a supportive learning environment, practical academic programmes, and training that prepares graduates for leadership roles in a rapidly evolving global economy.
