The prestigious honour was announced during the Universitas 21 Annual Network Meeting and Leadership Summit held in Glasgow on April 21, in recognition of Etim’s outstanding academic achievements, leadership qualities, and dedication to expanding access to higher education.
Etim, who is currently a doctoral researcher and Postgraduate Teaching Assistant at the School of Geography, University of Nottingham, was celebrated for his growing influence as an emerging scholar contributing to global discussions on sustainability and environmental responsibility.
His research focuses on how environmental responsibility is shaped through cultural, institutional, and behavioural systems, an area that is increasingly influencing international conversations around climate action, sustainability, and policy development.
The research is funded by Nigeria’s Petroleum Technology Development Fund and examines how societies and institutions construct environmental responsibility across different contexts.
The award further highlights the growing impact of Nigerian scholars on the global academic stage, particularly in areas addressing pressing environmental and developmental challenges.
Speaking after receiving the recognition, Etim described the award as both encouraging and inspiring.
“This recognition affirms my belief that research and academic work are most meaningful when they enable others to imagine new possibilities and contribute to meaningful change,” he said.
Beyond academic excellence, the U21 Leader of the Future recognition celebrates young scholars whose work demonstrates the potential to influence society through innovation, leadership, and inclusive thinking.
Etim’s achievement has also been viewed as a proud moment for Nigerians in the diaspora, especially within the international academic community, where his work continues to gain attention for its relevance to sustainable development and environmental policy.
