Rather than staging another grand celebration, Wema Bank chose a more customer-centred approach to commemorate its 81st anniversary—turning the spotlight on the people and businesses it serves. The milestone, which coincided with the 9th anniversary of its digital platform ALAT on May 2, 2026, was marked by a series of rewards, initiatives, and forward-looking programmes.

Building on the momentum of its 80th anniversary in 2025, the bank shifted gears this year by giving back directly to customers. Celebrations included rewards distributed via the ALAT app and additional incentives unveiled during the launch of the fifth season of its widely followed 5 for 5 Reward Initiative, which also took place on the anniversary day.

A Future-Focused Theme

Anchored on the theme “Your Future of Possibilities, Powered by Wema Bank,” the anniversary went beyond celebration to introduce a specialised customer success initiative. This programme is designed to equip diverse customer groups—including entrepreneurs, students, working-class women, and creatives—with tailored support, practical guidance, and strategic insights.

The goal, according to the bank, is to help these groups unlock opportunities, overcome barriers, and make measurable progress toward their ambitions.

Leadership Perspective

Explaining the rationale behind the bank’s approach, Managing Director/CEO Moruf Oseni highlighted the need to adapt to a rapidly changing world.

“The world is rapidly evolving. Digital evolution and emerging technologies continue to present newer opportunities and realities. To thrive, one must be prepared to adapt where needed and ready to leverage the possibilities ahead; and this is what we want to help our customers achieve,” he said.

He added that the anniversary provided an opportunity to reinforce the bank’s responsibility to its customers:
“With millions of individuals and businesses in our care, we have a deep sense of responsibility towards helping them make meaningful progress and our 81st anniversary presents the perfect opportunity for us to deepen our efforts towards fulfilling that responsibility.”

Building More Than Banking

Oseni emphasised that the bank’s strategy goes beyond traditional financial services.
“Beyond banking solutions, we are curating opportunities, providing platforms, building an entire ecosystem engineered in the best interests of every unique Wema Bank customer. Our goal is for our customers to grow as we grow, to always be one step ahead, and to make accelerated progress towards their future of possibilities as we journey with them,” he said.

This vision reflects a broader shift in the banking sector, where institutions are increasingly focused on offering holistic support systems rather than just financial products.

Track Record of Impact

Over the years, Wema Bank has built a reputation for supporting individuals and businesses through targeted financial solutions, digital innovation, and customer-focused services.

From facilitating access to funding to delivering digital banking tools and personalised services, the bank continues to position itself as a partner in growth for its customers. Its latest anniversary initiatives reinforce that commitment—highlighting a strategy centred not just on growth, but on shared progress and long-term impact.
